Ancestrify stands on decades of openly published research and freely given software. This page names everyone whose work reaches you in a report, a map or a downloaded video, and the licence it reaches you under. Where a dataset or a tool asks to be cited, the citation is here in full.

Maps and imagery

The interactive atlas, the Haplo Mapper, the globe in every ancestry video and any live map posed in the Mapper are drawn from open map data and public-domain satellite imagery.

  • OpenStreetMap contributors

The underlying map data — coastlines, borders, rivers, place names — for the Light and Dark basemaps, including any Mapper figure posed on one.

Licence: Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0

  • OpenMapTiles

The vector tile schema our basemap styles are built against.

Licence: BSD-3-Clause (software) · CC BY 4.0 (schema)

  • OpenFreeMap

Hosts the vector tiles, the shaded-relief raster and the Noto Sans glyph sets our maps render, including the live map the Mapper poses.

    Licence: MIT

  • Natural Earth

Natural Earth II with Shaded Relief (ne2sr) — the terrain shading under the Light and Dark basemaps.

    Licence: Public domain

  • NASA EOSDIS GIBS

Blue Marble imagery. The BlueMarble_NextGeneration layer is the Satellite basemap — and the Satellite option when posing a map in the Mapper; BlueMarble_ShadedRelief_Bathymetry is the globe in the ancestry videos and its close-up detail tiles.
